Imbolc: The Goddess Walks the Earth
|
I have something I'd like to share with you...
A little over one year ago, I closed my eyes, took a deep breath, and launched myself off a metaphorical cliff... trusting that the Goddess would hold me up. And (thank goodness!), She did! That was the start of the Wicca School's first course, A Year And A Day: 53 Weeks to Becoming a Wiccan. It wasn't actually ready to launch — almost half of the lessons were unwritten, and none were uploaded. I hadn't even figured out the layout or even, really, how to deliver the lessons to students. All I had was a whole lot of people anxiously awaiting this Wiccan training, a spouse who was willing to carry pretty much the whole load for a year, and a thimbleful of faith. Yep. Only a thimbleful! I wish I could tell you how confident in myself and/or the Goddess I was, but every step of the way I was heard to say "This is literally impossible! I'll never get this done in time!" (My friends and family can vouch for this; they heard it many a time. ) WELL! I'm so pleased to be able to say... We did it ! (The Goddess and I, with some help from generous volunteers.) It's hard to believe, but by the time you read this, I'll have finished and uploaded the final lesson in the first course! (I guess it's true what they say, if you have as much faith as a mustard seed and you can move mountains!) And that means, among other things, that I can give this 'Zine the attention it deserves — or rather, the attention you deserve! There are some wrap-up things I need to do — a LOT of them, in fact — but the pace won't be as grueling (I certainly hope!), and I'm looking forward to giving more time to you on Facebook, Twitter, and the other social media services. I'd like to thank those who kindly donated their time to helping make this happen —Shakti Mind

And of course my spouse Jamie without whom I would’ve been too hungry, cold, tired, and overwhelmed to get it all done! |
Big hugs to all these wonderful people!!
And I want to really thank you, too, for your understanding and patience with this challenging year (or three)!
The Zine's were less stuffed-with-treats-like-a-Yule-stocking than usual, and fans on social media were probably beginning to wonder if I'd fallen off the Earth! But now, be warned... I'm ba-a-a-ack!So what do I have to offer you today?
This edition of the Silver Chalice focuses on the coming Spring with an article on Imbolc (a sneak-peak from the lesson on that topic).
And this Spring, the Earth is bringing forth more than new flowers and fresh greens, and we're feeling the strain of that — see the Energy Field Barometer column for details.
We also take a look at the issues around using the W-word, in the Ask The Priestess column.
With, of course, a few more useful bits and bobs scattered throughout.
And some very exciting happenings in the Best Resources Column! |

If you live in the Northern Hemisphere, January was the perfect time to start — it's timed to lead you through the course as you walk through each of the Sabbats in the Wiccan Wheel of the Year.
If you still want to learn Wicca this year, though, it's not too late to catch up! If you'd like to learn Wicca synchronised with the seasons, and you're willing to move quickly through your first lessons, I can still arrange for you to join the 2016 class. It seems to really be worth it! (See what the students already are saying about this course, below.)To join and find out more here, please see A Year And A Day: 53 Weeks to Becoming a Wiccan today, before the other students get too far ahead to join.

Brighid, the Goddess in whose honour this Sabbat is named and often celebrated, is a Goddess of beginnings, inspiration, insight, creativity, self-expression, craft (especially smithing), all learned skills, healing, poetry, and all the arts. She is the keeper of the Sacred Well and Eternal Flame.3
Brighid signifies the fire and moisture that dwell within — vitality, inspiration, healing, caring, etc. — hidden at times but always living. At Imbolc, it's said that the Goddess walks the Earth, and wherever She steps, flowers spring up. Since all flowers are symbols / expressions of the Goddess, this is factual... in a way. Wherever flowers bloom, Goddess Energy is certainly present and strong. Brighid, as the particular Goddess of this season, is a Maiden Goddess4 — Goddess of dawn, Spring, youthfulness, and returning life.
This is coming in February too...
You've probably heard me rave about Christie Marie Sheldon's Unlimited Abundance training too — another of the breakthrough systems my spouse and I have used (and still use) to make positive changes in our lives. As you can guess, we find that it really works! (That's why we keep doing it.) I've written about it in this article if you want a little more info: Best Self-Healing Techniques to Make Real and Lasting Personal Transformation.I've found it a great bargain for the amount of transformation it initiates. (And of course there's a money-back guarantee if you don't find it to work for you.) There will be no-cost webinars you can join in mid-February to find out more about how she does it. That's all I really know for now. More info to follow as I learn more...
Want to know when the next Solstice or Equinox is, exactly?
You probably know that the Sabbats for Solstices and Equinoxes are celebrated close to the 21st of March, June, September, and December... but not necessarily on the 21st. Sometimes it can be the 19th, or 23rd. If you want to celebrate the exact date of the Sabbat, you first need to know when that is, right? That's why I made this new page. It lists the upcoming Solstices and Equinoxes up until 2017, so you can plan way ahead if you like, or at least find out when the next one is due. This page also explains whether or not it's necessary to celebrate the Sabbat on the exact date... and what to do if you can't celebrate it then.So check it out.

Goddess of all inspiration and creativity, all translation from the Divine to earthly form — and hence Goddess of childbirth and healing as well as all writing, arts, and crafts. She is a commonly celebrated Wiccan Goddess. Maiden Goddess, Goddess of springtime and new growth, Her festival is held on Feb 2, a Cross-Quarter Sabbat which is named after her (and alternatively called Imbolc). Continue...
As Wiccans, we celebrate the Goddess Brigid with rites on Her sacred day at Imbolc, also called in Her honour, Brigid. On Brigid's Eve, the Goddess walks the Earth among us. She has been absent the whole winter long, leaving us in the cold, impersonal, dangerous embrace of the Hag of Winter, the Cailleach.
And finally She has returned... and we celebrate!
Brigid's holy day is February 2nd, also known as Imbolc. Imbolc rites are designed to honour this Goddess, who embodies the return of Spring and hope and life. Continue...Brigid's Cross is ancient Pagan symbol for Brigid. It's also known as a Celtic Sun Wheel or Solar Cross (once again confirming Her status as Sun Goddess).
Brigid's Cross is made as an Imbolc rite.
At Imbolc, Brigid walks upon the Earth, and by creating Her Sun Wheel we invite and welcome the Goddess, and Springtime, into our homes. Here you'll learn how to make this Solar Cross, and it's easy... at least easier than you might think. With a little practice, it's a snap. Have fun!! Continue...
Dear Priestess, Much love and greetings. Each time I see your posts I become happier. Though I have a resentment, towards the name witch. I like to hear such words as Mother Earth and Gaia spirituality. Some years back, without knowing who is the Mother Earth, the name Gaia came to me. I hate the word witch with passion but all that you are saying is true. I can't bear such words as witch ( because of stigma attached to it ). Thanks for your beautiful heart.A.E.
I must confess — I wasn't fond of the W-word when I started learning about Wicca, either.
I didn't like the connotations, and how it seemed to mean something really negative. "Witch" conjured up (pun intended) thoughts of nasty, capricious, selfish, evil, Satan-worshipping, smelly, ugly creatures that were perhaps not even human. I did some research, however, and found out what the word actually meant originally. "Witch" means two things...
It took me some time to clear my own preconceptions around the world Witch. Nowadays, I'm easy with whichever word. (Again, pun intended. )
Granted, I'm a fighter. I deliberately challenge oppression and ignorance whenever I encounter it (ideally — but not always — gracefully and gently). I aim to sweep ignorance and prejudice away, to clear the path for others to safely wear whatever labels they wish. So I could wear the title of Witch proudly, and if necessarily, defiantly. Not everyone can handle the backlash, though, so not everyone will be comfortable wearing such a controversial label. And not everyone needs to. However, there's a difference between choosing not to call yourself a Witch, and reacting so strongly to any use of the word that it interferes with your happiness and growth. If it inhibites us in any way or restricts us from enjoying and continuing our learning, it's a roadblock to our own happiness. I guess the thing that really made the difference for me was realising that "Witches" get a bad rap on purpose, specifically to keep women from finding out about their innately feminine form of power. And if someone is trying to keep me, or anyone else, disempowered... well, I'm not going to go along with it willingly! Words definitely have power. That's why they're so often used as weapons! But we can take back the power that has been used against us. That's why I use the words Witch and Wiccan interchangeably. The word "Wiccan" often tries to keep itself clean, free of the taint of feminine, Nature-based magick and healing. It was popularized by a man — Gerald Gardner. It's the male version of Witchcraft, literally — the feminine form of the word is actually Wicce. So by eschewing any blatant connection with the ancient feminine wise women, and by virtue of the automatic blessing given anything male in patriarchal cultures, "Wicca" seems more respectable. To me, that's just not okay. I figure I have to stand up for Witchcraft, as a Handmaiden to the Goddess, for the benefit of all Her daughters. It's also important to me to try to be inclusive, and not let labels divide us. Many people think of themselves with one label or the other, and as a teacher, I need to be inclusive with that. I hope that it doesn't bother you too much, or keep you from my writings or other sources of good, empowering information.
Thanks for writing. Bright Blessings to you!

Well, it's another fun Energy Field we've got going on. This one started in early-to-mid January and was characterised by a high tide of emotionality. You may have found yourself prone to sorrow or despair, or being very short-tempered (depending on how you tend to express these Energies). Along with Mercury in Retrograde, this is causing strife in relationships — that is, anyone you're trying to communicate with. (Thank goodness we're past that, and in the wind-down.) There was a perhaps-related Energy going around which took one of two forms...
