& The Great Date Debate

December 21, 2012 -- that's the turning point of the Shift of Ages.

Or is it?

You'd think we'd know when the "end of the world" was coming, wouldn't you? It's the kind of thing people consider important!

Unfortunately, things are not so cut-and-dried.

The Date Debate

With all the talk and hype about December 21, 2012, we tend to think the date is carved in stone... well, actually, the one on the Mayan Calendar sort of is.

But there is a lot of disagreement about the specific date.

For instance, February 10, 2011 is a vital turning-point in the Mayan Calendar.

And many experts on the Mayan Calendar claim that the real day is not December 21, 2012 but October 28, 2011!

And then of course the Egyptian and Indian calendars are a few years away from either.

So which is the REAL day?

Well, let's check it out...

February 10, 2011

According to the Mayan Calendar, on February 10, 2011 we entered the ultimate stage of the evolution of consciousness: Universal Consciousness.

If this is so, why is December 21, 2012 predicted to be the all-important date?

It's because of the nature of transitions. When you step off a boat onto the dock, you have officially shifted from water to dry land. But are you really on the land yet?

As I understand it, we have a while to go before the last vestiges of earlier levels of consciousness are left behind completely.

And while the 2012 Transition may have kicked into high gear on February 10, 2011, we haven't quite reached the Galactic Alignment yet. That date is what December 21, 2012 is really talking about.

Or, was it October 28, 2011?

The Transition Point may be Samhain of 2011, rather than Yule of 2012.

Why the uncertainty?

The Mayan Calendar was obviously based on a different system than the current Gregorian calendar. Therefore it had to be translated, to give us a date that make sense to modern English-speakers.

After all, "13 Ahau in the tzolkin count" or "13.0.0.0.0" -- as the Mayans would call it -- just isn't very helpful to most of us!

Is It A Bird? Is It A Plane?

We're working with the Gregorian Calendar, and in order to know what day "13.0.0.0.0" would be in our calendar, we have to find some point of correlation between the two -- like some event the Mayans recorded, that we also know of.

Not so easy. Now we have to translate their language, as well.

For example, the event originally used to sync the two calendars was the appearance in the night sky of Chak Ek'. This was assumed to be Venus (which was very important to the Mayans).

However, some later studies believe it to be a meteor, which throws the whole schedule off.

Because of this translation from one calendar system to another, there is some ambiguity. So while most researchers agree that December 21, 2012 is the ending date of the cycle, there are solid reasons to believe that the ending date could be a bit earlier -- October 28, 2011 to be exact.

Many of the foremost Mayan Calendar experts believe this is the actual prophecied date.

It's Only An Eyeblink Difference

Maybe 14 months seems like a big difference to us, but when you consider the scale of the Mayan Calendars, one of which begins with the Big Birth of the universe, what's a year here or there? Even in terms of the start of the calendar, about 5000 years ago, 14 months is but a mere blip.

Granted, as we will be living through the period, we could wish for some pinpoint accuracy!

In any case, as I've said before, the Transition is a process, not an open-and-shut door. I doubt we'll notice a whole lot of difference between the two dates.

But for the purposes of these articles, we'll continue to go with the most well-known and accepted date of December 21, 2012.

Why The Disagreement Doesn't Matter

Regardless of astronomy and mathematics, something big is going on. We're heading toward a transformation of massive proportion, and it's coming soon.

In fact, it's already started.

The Transformation is well-underway. It's not like a light-bulb switching on in a dark room. It's a process, away from the logical-individualistic-materialistic mind to the intuitive-unified-spiritual Heart.

If you've been paying attention, you have already seen lots of evidence of this shift. The rise of Wicca as a major religion/spiritual path is one sign! The Charter for Compassion, the group apology of men for millennia of subjugation and violence, the massive outcry for peace at the start of Bush's war, the rise of people for freedom everywhere from Egypt to Wisconsin. . . the list goes on and on.

And if December 21, 2012 isn't the exact moment, with pinpoint accuracy, it is close enough to serve an important purpose...

It is at least the symbolic tipping-point of the Shift of Ages.

So Is December 21, 2012 The Exact Moment Of The Change?

Yes, on a symbolic, seasonal, and perhaps galactic level.

And . . .

No, since it is the tipping-point of a whole process rather than the one moment of transition.
