Divination: Accessing Divine Guidance
Divination is a very common practice among Wiccans, Witches, and other Pagans.
It's a wonderful practice, with lots of spiritual benefits. Not to mention that it's a great way to
increase your personal power as well as your happiness. And there are many methods you can use.
But you might have a lot of questions before you decide to try it... questions such as:
- What is its purpose?
- How does it work?
- Is it somehow evil?
- Is it consorting with demons?
- And (here's what you might really want to know) how can it work for YOU?
In this section, we'll look at the definitions, how it works, whether you need to be psychic, and various tools and methods you can use. Plus, we'll look at why it is a valuable practice in spiritual evolution.
Let's start out with the basics. First we'll clear up a couple common misconceptions. Then we'll find out what it is really all about.
WITCH TIP: In these articles, we'll be looking at the practice of divining for yourself and for friends, rather than hiring a psychic to do readings for you.
Everyone has the ability to use oracles! And the spiritual benefits are reached only when you do it yourself.
Read the rest of the articles in this section to find out how and why.
Misconceptions about Divining
There are some ideas that are confusing. We can thank the Christian churches and Hollywood for perpetuating the silliness.
I'd like to get them out in the open right away, so we know what we are and aren't talking about, for the rest of these articles.
The Difference Between Divination and Fortune Telling
Divination is much more than fortune telling.
The definition of fortune telling is finding out about the future, before it happens.
Yes, you can learn about the future through various oracular methods. These tools offer ongoing guidance about which paths to take and which to avoid.
But that's not the real value of this practice.
Telling fortunes is merely a side-effect . . . and not a very important one, when you consider the real potential of it... direct communication with Divine guidance.
Where Do The Demons Come In?
If you're looking for some way to play with demons, sorry! This is the wrong page -- and the wrong site -- for you. (Might I suggest a website that does free head examinations?)
Prophesying with these tools has nothing to do with demons, devils, or anything else enticingly evil.
Using oracles has gotten a bad wrap in the last several centuries, but that's nothing more than a nasty Public Relations campaign. The Powers That Be have tried very hard to make Pagans and others look bad, and they're not above spreading lies to accomplish that goal.
What is amazing is that such a twisted interpretation could take root at all! Considering that the source of this psychic guidance is completely the opposite.
Read on to see why...
How Do We Define Divination?
Well, the name really says it all.
The root of the word is, of course, "divine." (Not "demon.")
So my
definition of divination is:
Any action that attempts to
solicit information directly from the Divine,
through the use of interpretive tools.
In other words, this is the practice of using specific methods and tools to hear the guidance of the Divine.
Sometimes this comes as insight into a problem, or information that was needed, or suggestions on what action to take.
Divining is like spending time with your best friend and wisest mentor, chatting over tea.... but even better! Not only are you feeding the relationship so it will be strong and healthy, but you're gaining invaluable advice on everything you need to know in life!
That's why I highly recommend daily divining for everyone, Wiccan or not.
In my opinion, it's one of the best spiritual practices a person can do!
